Description of the artwork
In The Flight of Pulcinella, Claudio Giulianelli places his archetypal figure — the woman with the red-pointed headdress, guardian and priestess of the theater of existence — at the center of a scene of celebration and liberation. In her hands, the usual wicker basket overflows with masks: Pulcinella, the Doctor, Harlequin, the Captain, Colombina. But this time something is different: large yellow ribbons unfold around the figure, swirling through space like gusts of wind or carnival confetti, transforming the blue background into a moving stage.
The “flight” in the title is not physical but symbolic: it is the liberation of the masks from the basket, their release into the air as open possibilities, as roles waiting to be embodied. The yellow ribbons — vivid, dynamic, almost dancing — break the hieratic composure of previous works and introduce a sense of movement, joy, and cosmic carnival.
The woman remains at the center, solid and serene, while around her the world comes alive and transforms. The Flight of Pulcinella is perhaps the most festive and vital work in the series: an ode to the multiplicity of being, to the power of art to free what is enclosed and give wings to what seemed motionless.
