Description of the artwork
In La Fuga di Pulcinella, Claudio Giulianelli reinterprets one of the most archetypal masks of the Italian tradition with contemporary sensitivity. The central figure — a woman with a hieratic bearing, wrapped in a carmine-red dress and crowned with a multi-pointed headdress — composedly holds a wicker basket filled with small theatrical masks: Pulcinella, the horse, the clown, the devil, the doctor. The gesture is at once an offering and a safeguard, like someone who carries within them the fragments of a plural and masked humanity.
The background opens onto an expansive landscape: a golden field beneath a blue sky streaked with luminous clouds, giving the scene a wide and almost metaphysical breath. The palette — dominated by the warm reds of the figure and the yellows of the field — creates a powerful chromatic contrast with the sky, suspending the scene in a time outside of time.
The artwork belongs to Giulianelli's exploration of the theater of existence: the masks do not conceal, but reveal. Each character in the basket is a possibility of being, a role that humanity has worn and continues to wear. The guardian-woman thus becomes an allegory of collective memory, of the tradition that is passed down without losing its vitality.
