Description of the artwork
In Gli amanti e la zattera, Eugenio Franzò paints the only artwork in his body of work featuring a male figure. A couple of lovers lies stretched out on a bed floating on a drifting life raft: a powerful image, suspended between intimacy and precariousness.
The bed — a symbol of refuge, love, and vulnerability — becomes a raft: there is no safe harbor, no destination. Only drifting, and the choice to face it together. A golden moon dominates the scene, slowly fading with time, like everything precious and unrepeatable.
The artwork speaks of love as an act of courage: staying together even when the world around is uncertain, even when the raft does not guarantee safety. Franzò does not romanticize — he denounces and celebrates the fragility of the human bond at the same time.
