Description of the work
In The Sound of Silence, Claudio Giulianelli reaches one of the expressive peaks of his pictorial research. A female figure — with a serene face and a direct, slightly absorbed gaze — plays a lute with the naturalness of someone who does not perform a melody but inhabits it. The midnight blue dress, edged in gold, leaves the shoulders bare in a gesture of ancient elegance; the branched pointed headdress, also blue with green reflections, expands into space like an unfolding thought.
The background is dominated by broad yellow bands that cross the composition diagonally on a sky-blue field: ribbons of light, trajectories of sound, or perhaps the invisible threads of a cosmic theater. The chromatic contrast between the deep blue of the figure and the vibrant yellow of the background creates a powerful visual tension, which recalls the Flemish pictorial tradition while simultaneously engaging with the abstract sensibility of the twentieth century.
The lute — the quintessential instrument of Renaissance and Baroque music — becomes in Giulianelli's hands a polysemic symbol: it is the voice of the soul, the medium between the visible and the invisible, between sound and the silence that contains it. The title is a fertile oxymoron: silence is not absence, but the condition in which sound acquires meaning.
A work of rare formal completeness, The Sound of Silence synthesizes Giulianelli's poetics: archetypal figures suspended in mental landscapes, where Italian iconographic tradition blends with a fully contemporary pictorial sensibility.
