Description of the artwork

In Beauty, Claudio Giulianelli reduces the scene to its essentials: a half-length female figure, her face seen from the front and slightly veiled by a pensive, almost questioning expression. Her skin has a cool, almost lunar tone—as if the figure belonged to a suspended time, outside the ordinary light. The headpiece is a structure of antique pink rings and spirals that expands laterally like an organic halo, recalling the plant and cosmic forms of the more elaborate works in the series.

Cradled in her arms, held with maternal care, is a clown's head: yellow hair, red nose, painted smile, white ruffled collar. The contrast between the figure's almost sacred composure and the clown's buffoonish liveliness is the heart of the work. Who is beauty? The woman who looks, or the clown who smiles? The seriousness of the face, or the lightness of the mask?

The background is a uniform light blue, without landscape, without horizon—a pure mental space in which the figure and her double float weightlessly.

Here Giulianelli returns to the fundamental theme of his research: beauty is not in appearance, but in the gesture of holding it—of cherishing what makes us laugh and what makes us cry, what is serious and what is play, with the same care.
