Description of the artwork
In The City of Children, Eugenio Franzò constructs a layered urban vision, suspended between memory, imagination and collective narrative. The composition unfolds as a pictorial collage in which graphic marks, figurative fragments and barely suggested architectures coexist in a dynamic balance between order and expressive freedom.
The canvas is traversed by arches and architectural structures reminiscent of squares, porticos and ideal cities. These elements create a kind of visual stage where stylized human figures and children's faces appear, symbolic evocations of childhood as a place of authenticity, dreams and spontaneity.
The mixed technique used by the artist — combining oil, charcoal, recycled paper and India ink — creates a surface rich in material layers. The applied papers emerge as fragments of urban memory, while the charcoal marks trace nervous and vital lines that guide the viewer's gaze.
The color palette alternates intense reds, deep purples and vibrant blues, creating emotional contrasts that amplify the narrative tension of the work. Color is not merely a decorative element, but becomes an emotional structure: bright fields and overlapping transparencies suggest movement, energy and life.
The City of Children does not represent a real city, but a symbolic city, constructed through the free and visionary gaze of childhood. It is a space where memory, imagination and reality intertwine, reminding the viewer that every city truly lives only through the people who inhabit it and the dreams that traverse it.
