Description of the work
In The city is still far away, Claudio Giulianelli returns to the heart of his research: the theater of existence as an inner landscape. A female figure with an hieratic bearing occupies the center of the composition, wrapped in a red dress with white stripes that recalls the costumes of the Commedia dell'Arte. The headpiece — a pink structure with branched spikes, almost like coral or aerial roots — stands out against a bright blue sky, giving the figure an aura that is at once festive and arcane.
In her arms, the woman carefully holds a puppet: a smiling Harlequin, in a yellow and black outfit, with a white collar and pointed hat. The gesture is maternal and theatrical at the same time — who holds whom? Who is the puppeteer, who is the puppet? Giulianelli leaves the question open, suspending the scene in a fertile and poetic ambiguity.
In the background, a vast landscape: the yellow earth extends to the horizon, where the sea meets the sky in a thin line. In the distance, barely perceptible, the silhouettes of two sailing ships — the city, perhaps, is still there, beyond the water, beyond time. In the foreground, three soap bubbles float in the air: fragile, iridescent, ephemeral like every performance.
A work of rare narrative elegance, capable of evoking Magritte and De Chirico while maintaining an entirely personal voice.
