Description of the artwork
In La Scelta, Claudio Giulianelli creates one of the most symbolically charged compositions in his entire body of work. A frontal female figure — hieratic, motionless like a sacred icon — holds a basket woven from golden wicker with both hands. In the basket are two objects in apparent contrast: a black mask from the Commedia dell’Arte — the face of theater, fiction, and play — and a white bird skull — nature, death, and the time that consumes every performance.
The headpiece is one of the most elaborate in the series: a structure of antique pink rings and spirals that expands symmetrically into space like a vegetal halo, a mandala, a miniature solar system. The figure wears the antique red dress from previous works, but here the gesture is different — she does not carry, play, or blow: she offers. The basket is a votive offering, a question posed to the viewer.
The background is Giulianelli’s archetypal landscape: the yellow field beneath an intense blue sky, with a thin strip of sea on the horizon. The light is full, without shadows — like in dreams or visions. La Scelta is the choice that every human being is called to make: between the mask and the bone, between fiction and truth, between the theater of existence and its ultimate substance. Giulianelli does not suggest which one to choose: he places the basket, and waits.
