Description of the artwork

In L’Amore di Sophia, Claudio Giulianelli abandons the open landscape of his previous works and immerses the scene in an all-encompassing, incandescent red that envelops the figure and background in a single atmosphere of emotional tension. The male figure — rare in the artist’s catalog, which is usually dominated by female presences — turns three-quarters toward the viewer with an ambiguous expression: ironic, melancholic, complicit.

The jester’s pointed headdress, in antique pink on a crimson background, blends with the shadow cast on the wall, doubling the figure in a silent double. In the raised hand, two puppets: Pulcinella in white with a black mask, and a dark figure — perhaps the Devil, perhaps Death — which contrasts with the lightness of the other. The gesture is that of the seasoned puppeteer, of one who knows every role and every mask, of one who has loved enough to know that love itself is a performance.

The title evokes wisdom (from the Greek σοφία, sophia) and its lover: not a specific man, but the archetype of one who pursues knowledge through play, the mask, theater. A tribute to the philosophical tradition that sees in the love of wisdom the highest form of existence.
