Description of the artwork

In The Essence of Things, Claudio Giulianelli entrusts a solitary female figure with the task of questioning the world with an unusual tool: a thin rod, almost like a flute or a bubble wand, from which a small iridescent sphere is released into the air. The gesture is gentle, focused, almost ritualistic—like blowing on a flame to keep it alive, or on a seed to make it fly.

The figure wears the carmine-red dress and two-pointed jester's cap, but here the mask is absent: the face is uncovered, the gaze turned three-quarters toward the viewer with an expression of quiet awareness. There is no theater, no performance—or perhaps there is only that, the most essential: the gesture of creating something fragile and beautiful, destined to dissolve.

In the background, Giulianelli's open landscape: the yellow earth stretches to the horizon, cut by a white path that disappears in the distance. The blue sky, traversed by luminous clouds, breathes with the figure. In the foreground, two already released soap bubbles float in the air—ephemeral, perfect, unrepeatable like every authentic moment.

The title is a poetic and philosophical statement at the same time. Giulianelli does not paint what appears, but what remains when appearance dissolves: lightness, care, the desire for beauty.
