Description of the artwork
In The Last Embrace, Baldo Ingrassia reduces the figure to its emotional essence. The human body is not depicted in detail but appears as a dark silhouette immersed in an undefined, almost nocturnal space. The figure is curled inward, seated, while the light behind it — a golden disc — evokes a moon or an inner sun.
The brushstrokes of color cross the body like traces of memory: blues, greens, and oranges do not represent the skin but emotions. The painterly gesture becomes an affective language. The embrace in the title is not physical but symbolic: it is the moment when the person holds on to what they are about to leave behind, or welcomes what is changing.
The contrast between the deep black of the background and the luminous marks creates a strong emotional tension. The figure emerges and at the same time seems to dissolve into the paint, suggesting the theme of separation, memory, and transformation.
The artwork addresses transition: loss and acceptance coexist in the same instant.
