Description of the artwork
In Madame, Baldo Ingrassia creates a female figure defined not by her features but by the energy surrounding her. Her face is barely suggested, almost dissolved, while her body emerges from a continuously moving painterly texture.
The light blue background creates a fluid, atmospheric space, reminiscent of the sky or an underwater environment. Around the figure, rapid marks, layers of color, and gestural trajectories suggest thoughts, memories, and perceptions. The transparent spheres scattered throughout the composition act as symbols: they seem to contain fragments of landscape or memory, evoking time, experience, and consciousness.
The central figure appears suspended between presence and dissolution. The intense blues outlining her body do not enclose her form but open it up, as if she were permeated by emotions and inner states. The artist thus presents a psychological rather than physical portrait: Madame becomes an archetype of contemporary identity, ever-changing and layered.
The artwork explores the theme of self-perception: who we are is not a stable form but a collection of memories, visions, and transformations.
