Description of the artwork
In Beyond Concrete, Eugenio Franzò creates a scene suspended between reality and memory, where past and present merge in a silent dialogue. Two stylized female figures, seen from behind or in profile, face each other within an imaginary space defined by a textured, vibrant golden background. This background is not merely a sky, but an inner landscape, a blank slate of memories that takes shape through the layering of paint.
The two figures are created using collage, with cutouts of fabric and newspaper forming their voluminous, decorated dresses. Their bright blue hair, outlined in pastel blue, contrasts with the warmth of the surrounding gold and the red and brown tones of their garments. They are not simply characters, but symbols: they embody the dialogue between different facets of the self, between who we have been and who we are becoming, united under the same golden sun.
On either side, two incomplete, textured architectural structures topped with corrugated cardboard serve as “totems of memory.” The drips of yellow and brown paint flowing down from these structures evoke the passage of time and the fluidity of the house-mind, a place of memories and lived experiences that is never static but constantly transforming.
The artwork explores the theme of personal identity: the most important encounter is not between two distinct entities, but between the individual and the complex layering of their own essence, on a journey of introspection illuminated by awareness.
