Description of the artwork
In Sassi di Matera, Eugenio Franzò creates a scene suspended between reality and memory, characterized by a powerful chromatic and material dynamism. Two identical female figures, with outlines vibrating in electric blue, stand out against a two-part background: one half dominated by a textured ice-white and the other by a deep, visceral red.
The artwork is a triumph of layering. The figures' dresses are composed of a complex collage of paper fragments, texts, and geometric patterns that evoke plumage and ancient decoration, transforming their bodies into living archives of experiences. The presence of jute and textured netting incorporated into the canvas gives the artwork a three-dimensionality that seems to burst beyond the pictorial boundaries.
The red of the background, furrowed by raised graphic marks resembling roots or scratches, represents the pulsating emotional element: it is passion, the connection to the earth, and ancestral memory. In contrast, the cool tones and white light suggest an abstract mental space where identity is reassembled.
