Description of the artwork
In Sic est, Claudio Giulianelli condenses the entire grammar of his pictorial universe with extraordinary economy of means. A female figure with a serene and archaic face emerges in the center of the composition, crowned by a red headdress of monumental proportions that occupies almost the entire upper half of the canvas: a form that is at once crown, cloud, and stage. The red — warm, full, carnal — dominates the space with the force of a primordial symbol.
With her hand raised, the figure holds two puppets: on the right, a white figure with a black mask — Pulcinella in his most essential version, reduced to the archetype; on the left, a small dark figure with a tricorne hat, the captain or the doctor of the Commedia dell’Arte. The puppets are not accessories: they are alter egos, projections of the soul, fragments of an inner theater that the figure carries with her like a destiny.
The light blue background — open sky, mental space — gives the scene a suspended lightness, almost dreamlike. Sic est — a deliberately ambiguous title, suspended between Latin and the gesture of showing — is a work that questions the boundary between who pulls the strings and who is moved, between mask and face, between fiction and truth.
