Description of the artwork

In this artwork, Baldo Ingrassia explores the deepest and most ancestral dimension of the human soul. The work moves away from classical figuration to embrace a powerful material abstraction, where deep black is not an absence of light, but a space pregnant with possibilities, containing within itself the birth of form.

The surface of the canvas is worked with a dense layering of color. From this primordial darkness emerges, like an epiphany, a suggested profile: not a defined face, but the very idea of an identity in the making. The brushstrokes of ochre, golden yellow, and the luminous scratches that tear through the darkness act as sparks of consciousness, suggesting that every truth is revealed only after having crossed the silence.

The artwork addresses the theme of introspection: it is the moment when the individual stops looking outward to listen to what inhabits their own shadow zones. The irregular textures invite the viewer to a tactile reading as well as a visual one, transforming the painting into an emotional map where chaos is gradually reassembled by the artistic act.
